For a New Notion of History, or What Kind of Past Do We Need at the Time of the Anthropocene

This talk will argue for a new concept of history appropriate for the time of the Anthropocene. Whereas modern historical knowledge emerged as one of the human sciences designed to understand the simultaneously constituted human being as a subject of study, recent ecological and technological discussions extend beyond such confines in addressing the concerns of a more-than-human world – of animals, plants, machines, artificial intelligence, Earth system changes – and their relation to the human world. To be able to make sense of concerns for the more-than-human, historical knowledge as we know it might need to be radically transformed.
I shall focus on two important aspects of the new notion of history. First, I invite to rethink history along multispecies lines, based on the fundamental recognition that human life is closely entangled with other forms of life. Second, I propose to challenge the conventional understanding of historical time and shall make a case for a pluralistic understanding of temporality that is open to its multiple rhythms, events and trajectories over different scales.
These two arguments presuppose and reinforce each other: the concept of history we need at the time of the Anthropocene includes all forms of life (multispecies history) and it also extends deep in the past and supports the interaction and integration of multiple time scales (multiscalar history).

Marek Tamm is Professor of Cultural History at the School of Humanities and Senior Researcher at the Institute of History, Archaeology and Art History, both in Tallinn University. He is also Head of Tallinn University Centre of Excellence in Intercultural Studies. His primary research fields are cultural history of medieval Europe, theory and history of historiography, and cultural memory studies. Historia sztuki i historia w sztuce

Projekt konferencji „Kluczowe pojęcia myślenia historycznego” otwiera szeroką perspektywę dla refleksji głęboko sięgającej w historię dyscypliny i jej obecny wielokształt. Zapraszając historyka sztuki, organizatorzy postawili jednak przed nim konkretne pytania. Dotyczą one nie tyle historii sztuki jako dziedziny badawczej, ile sztuki współczesnej, którą historia sztuki próbuje badać. Są to pytania o obecność motywów historycznych we współczesnej sztuce polskiej nawiązujących do wybranego kluczowego pojęcia myślenia historycznego (naród, obywatel, wolność, wydarzenie). Jakie kluczowe pojęcia - pytają organizatorzy - definiują dzisiejszy polski dyskurs artystyczny? Czy wiodące obecnie w debacie publicznej kategorie myślenia o przeszłości (naród, nacjonalizm, patriotyzm) znajdują odzwierciedlenie w  narracjach artystycznych? Pytanie takie nie dziwią w kraju, którego wyobraźnię historyczną kilku pokoleń ukształtował malarz. Wystąpienie będzie próbą odpowiedzi na zadane pytania.

Maria Poprzęcka, profesor historii sztuki, długoletni dyrektor Instytutu Historii Sztuki Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, obecnie profesor zwyczajny na Wydziale Artes Liberales UW. Jej zainteresowania naukowe są szerokie – sztuka XIX wieku i sztuka współczesna, metodologia badań nad sztuką i krytyka artystyczna. Jest autorką wielu książek, m.in. Inne obrazy. Oko – widzenie – sztuka. Od Albertiego do Duchampa, 2008 (Nagroda Literacka Gdynia w dziedzinie eseju, 2009); Impas. Opór, utrata, niemoc, sztuka, 2019. Od 1988 roku organizuje i wydaje Seminaria Metodologiczne w Nieborowie.
