In Defense of Things Soiled and Broken

Abstract:

In this talk I will briefly present the background to and main arguments of my book In defense of things. Archaeology and the ontology of objects, situating it within the wider discourses of the new materialism or “turn to things” of the last decades. The main part of my lecture, however, consists of a critical examination of the recent and predominantly theoretical and/or discursive attempts to turn to things favor. Here I argue that archaeology, the discipline of soiled and ruined things par excellence, constitutes a radical if largely ignored corrective to the new theoretical regime’s embracement of things.
